This week's topic was gadgets. We talked about new tablets hitting the market and the potential for new access to  ebooks for libraries in 2013. By participating in at least one of the three Things below, you will be entered in our first weekly raffle. Week 1's prize is a Nook!

*Note: Week 1's e-mail mentioned that Overdrive and 3M apps could be purchased, they are actually available to download for free.

Thing: In the comments below, discuss your favorite tablet or ereader device. What do you use? What does your family use?

Thing: On Monday, January 14th at 10 a.m., Darien Library will host a screening of Connected, a documentary about the visible and invisible connections of our time, in the community room. Attend this screening or the encore show Thursday, January 17th at 7 p.m.!

Thing: On Tuesday, January 15th at 9:30 a.m., Darien Library and YWCA Parent Awareness will host Cyber Safety for Kids and Tweens, a panel discussion, in the community room. More information about the event can be found here.

Ereader

We have not used ereaders yet in my family for books, only for papers and magazines. My son has a kindle but after reading a couple of books he didn't go back to it. Battery life seemed to be a big downside for him, perhaps it is as simple as buying a charger that is not dependent on the pc. I love my iPad for magazines and will try this, and my iPhone, for a book and see how it goes.

I love my Nook Simple Touch

I love my Nook Simple Touch because it has no tablet like features. I just use it to read my books and don't have to worry about anyone else borrowing for apps, games, magazines...Combined with an iPhone, I don't need a tablet, but would love to play with one all the same. I am actually a librarian at the Arapahoe Library District in Colorado but love what you are trying here and wanted to find out more. I will keep participating but am not raffle-worthy!

21 Things Week 1 Gadgets

I have an older Nook Color. I only use it when I am traveling. In general I still prefer the feel of an actual book. The Nook is helpful because I can also use it to check my e-mail. On the negative side, the screen is very tiring on the eyes and I can't read for more than an hour at a time.

Tablet

I just received an iPad mini for my birthday. I haven't explored the other tablet options, but I have been pleased with my iPad mini. Allows me to check email and the Internet easily. Also have been able to access some digital magazine subscriptions which has been handy. Looking forward to exploring Overdrive and 3M.

My Favorite Tablet or eReader

My favorite ereader is my iPhone. Our family owns an iPad and a kindle, but I have doubled the number of books I read by using the 3M Cloud Library app on my iPhone. It has a lot to do with the fact that the 3M Cloud Library is very easy to use and you can put books on hold. I tried using Overdrive previously and found there were too many steps involved. I use my iPhone to read because it is very accessible -- I always have it with me. I like that I can do so much with the device - use the phone, email, text, internet and read books to name a few. I find that keeping track of one gadget is easier for me. The screen is small but I solve that by enlarging the font on screen. I think having an eReader like a nook by my bedside would also be convenient and get rid of the stacks of books I have by my bed. I have not had a chance to explore that option.
