National Novel Writing Month challenges writers of all ages to pen a novel (50,000 words) during November. Sounds like a boring assignment, right? Wrong! Tweens and teens who participate in NaNoWriMo choose the genre, characters, plot line, conflicts -- they have all power and control over their writing! Join the librarians at Darien Library to discover your creativity through games, study of literary concepts, and writing exercises.

Educators across the country have used NaNoWriMo in their English curriculum to teach Common Core standards. A lesson plan on the NaNoWriMo website states: “Research shows that sustained, focused practice leads to skill development. Writing is no different! By working each day on a project that actually matters to them, students develop writing fluency, which is a necessary component of writing proficiency. Plus, they choose their own stories based on what matters to them, which leads to high student engagement and achievement.”

Participants can set word goals, find encouragement from their fellow writers, and delight in putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) in this flexible class. The only limit is your imagination!

This special program for tweens and teens will feature three writing sessions in the Tech Lab. Each week, we will focus on a different element of storytelling including characters, plot, setting, and theme.

Ages 10 to 18.
