Welcome to Darien Library Express Services!

Darien Library is open to visitors normal hours. Some of our programs are now available in-person outdoors. Most events continue to be held virtually. Marks are required at all times while in the building and must fully cover your mouth and nose at all times.

We do not have a date when full services and in-person programs will resume. The health and safety of our community and patrons is our top priority and we will continue to abide by federal, state, and local regulations and guidance.

What's Different

  • Marks are required to be worn at all times while within the Library in accordance with updated guidance from the Connecticut Department of Health.
  • Children under age 12 must remain with a caregiver at all times.
  • The Teen Lounge is open Monday-Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
  • The Lower Level of the Library will be closed.
  • All meeting rooms are closed until further notice.
  • Public computers are available on the Second Level.
  • Contactless checkouts with three self-checkouts available on the First Level.
  • No food or drinks are allowed in the Library until further notice.

Health & Safety

We care about your health and safety. Before reopening, we self-certified with the State of Connecticut that we are adhering to all health guidelines.

What We Are Doing

  • Staff will maintain a social distance of 6 feet.
  • Frequent cleaning of the building and service points.
  • Each staff desk will have Plexiglass installed on it.

What You Must Do

  • Masks must be worn in the Library at all times and fully cover the nose and mouth.

  • Social distancing of 6 feet is in effect.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed within the building at this time.

Returns are accepted seven days a week! The outdoor drop is open 24/7 while the indoor drop is available when the building is open.

Late fines will be reinstated beginning June 1st.

Changes Coming May 17th

Darien Library is thrilled to announce that starting on Monday, May 17th, we will resume normal hours including weekday evening hours. Below are details about what other regular activities and services will also resume that day. Thank you for your support over the past year.

Normal Hours

  • Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m.

The Children’s Library closes at 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday.

What's New

  • No time limits for using the Library
  • Unlimited holds
  • Return items 24/7 through the materials handling system
  • Study rooms for individuals and small groups (added in July)
  • 60-minute computer access
  • The return of some seating throughout the building
  • No appointments needed to visit the Children’s Library
  • Notary services resume
  • Holds will continue to be picked up from the Community Room
  • Outdoor events beginning this June and continued virtual events

Since items may be returned 24 hours a day starting May 17th, we will resume late fines on June 1st.

Prioritizing Safety

The following safety measures continue:
