As we’ve mentioned before, there has been an absolute run on the library. Our extended due dates have inspired our members to borrow by the wheelbarrow. You're all going tome for the holidays, it seems.
We can’t help but wonder what our books, CDs and DVDs are doing while we’re closed. So we’re turning to you to satisfy our curiosity.
Send us pictures of your Darien Library materials in the wild. We’ll put them all up on the library’s Flickr account and we’ll enter the best photos into our very first photo contest. Watch for an opportunity to vote for your favorite photos. Winners will be awarded a fabulous prize.
Please put Darien Library Photo Contest in the subject line and send it to our excellent publicty manager at bthomas@darienlibrary.org

There. I said it out loud. This Friday, the 21st, will be our final film of our final film series on our final Friday in this building. We are in such a whirlwind of preparation for the move right now, we're wondering when the reality of it is going to hit us.
Let's enjoy our last Friday together with good friends, the best cookies (ever), and an uplifting and spirited film. We'll be showing Hula Girls, a truly enjoyable film. Hula Girls has won several awards, including five major awards at the 2007 Japan Academy Awards -- Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, and Most Popular Film. I screened this film last year and was determined to secure the showing rights for our series this year. It's such a charmer about change and trying new things (and it's based on a true story!), I thought it the perfect fit for our final film before we embark on an exciting future together.
Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.
Admission is free.

Saturday night's going to be a blast...a blast about the past!
This Saturday, November 22nd from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., we will be hosting A Fond Farewell, a gathering to say goodbye to our beloved building on Leroy Avenue.
It's not too late to RSVP!
The ticket price is $75.00 per person and you can save your spot by calling 655-1234 x112. It's going to be a wonderful party, with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres being served as we mingle and reminisce. To add to the festive atmosphere of the event, there will also be a silent auction -- the opportunity to own a piece of the old Darien Library! Please join us! You won't want to miss it!
Saturday, November 15, 2008 - 1:24pm — Barbara T.
Last night, we had to turn away some eager and hardy movie-goers because the room was full. We're sorry to disappoint anyone who makes the effort to come out and spend time with us. We've never had such a large crowd for a foreign film...before we knew it, we were filled to capacity. It looks as if we will be opening our New Darien Library just in time!
Talk about the new building and our new Community Room, with its larger size, theater seating, and a sloped floor brought applause from our cramped and damp crowd. The picture at right, gives you a glimpse of what to expect.
We are excited, and glad that you are, too. In less than two weeks, we'll be closing this building. We've still got one more film left in the series. Please join us for our final film here at 35 Leroy next Friday, November 21st. We'll be showing Hula Girls. In Japanese with English subtitles, it's a heartwarming story in any language.
Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7.
Admission is free.
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - 2:17pm — Barbara T.

We had a one-week break from our Foreign Film Series to make room and time for our fabulous book sale and now we're back...and Jane's back, too! We couldn't be happier (mmm...cookies) and we know you're smiling, too. Happy, too, will you be with our film this Friday.
The Grocer's Son travels the French countryside in this slice-of-life little gem of a film. Antoine is forced to leave the city and return to Provence to help his family when his father becomes ill. He takes over driving the grocery van, traveling from village to village selling goods to those (mostly elderly) living in the tiny hamlets.
It's a coming-of-age movie with a story that is timeless and feels so genuine. It's not surprising that this became a surprise box office hit in France! The dvd doesn't come out until January...travel on over this Friday to see The Grocer's Son and see what all the fuss is about.
In French with English subtitles, this film is not rated. Running time is 96 minutes.
Showtime is at 7:30 p.m.
Doors open at 7.
Admission is free.
Wednesday, November 5, 2008 - 8:19pm — Barbara T.
The book sale begins on Saturday at 9 a.m.
Come to browse, but be prepared to buy (it will be hard to resist!).
Here are all the details.

Stocking up takes on a whole new meaning here during the month of November. We close the doors at Leroy Avenue for good at 6 p.m. on November 26th (that's the day before Thanksgiving)*, so it's time to start thinking about the books, audiobooks, movies, music, electronics, etc., that will get you through the holidays, the cold days, and the too-much-food daze ahead.

Any move usually makes those involved take stock...reflect, reminisce, hope, and dream. It's certainly been the case for us; it's been bittersweet and very exciting, but we know that we're taking with us the best of the best... the best collection, the best technology, the best ideas, and the best staff...in the best community anywhere. (For information about A Fond Farewell, a gathering to say goodbye to our beloved building, click here.)
We know you have questions about the move and what to expect (we feel your pain)...so, we've put together a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and we'll be adding to it as necessary. Click here to get to the page. We've also been putting lots of thought into trying to anticipate what questions you might have. Recently, Jen wrote from the front lines of the Circulation Desk about what to expect, and Kate took us on a sneak peek of the new Reference/Non-Fiction area of the New Building in her new post. Gretchen reports great news from the Children's Room, including more drop-in storytimes, two dedicated programming spaces, pre-literacy programs, a "Tot Spot," a "Creation Station," and much more!
Sounds great, right? Factor in our GREEN-ness, better parking, abundant natural light, more study rooms, specialty areas, more programs, and the familiar faces of our staff, and it is a recipe for success. There's still plenty going on throughout November right here. Do stop by to say hello (and goodbye...perhaps hum a bar or two of Auld Land Syne?), and enjoy all there is to do at the Library.
*The Grand Opening of the New Library is January 10, 2009.
When are you closing the current Darien Library building?
The doors to the Darien Library at 35 Leroy Avenue will close at 6 P.M. on Wednesday, November 26, 2008. That’s the day before Thanksgiving.
When does the New Darien Library at 1441 Post Road open?
Our Grand Opening is Saturday, January 10, 2009. We’ve planned a big celebration plus lots of tours and special events, so please join us!
Will I still be able to include Darien Library in my end-of-year giving even though you're closed?
Yes. Your support is critical to the ongoing success of the Darien Library! Every year, we rely on the generous donations given by you to purchase new books, DVDs, audiobooks, computers, and other resources. Our website presents the opportunity for you to make a donation or transfer stocks to benefit the Library. You may also call us at 203-6551234 x153. We appreciate your continued support!
What happens if I have items on loan during the time you’re closed?
Any three-week materials borrowed after November 5 will be due back on January 14, 2009.
Two-week DVD sets borrowed on or after November 13 will have a due date of January 14, 2009.
Seven-day books and DVDs will have their normal loan period until November 19. Any seven-day books or DVDs borrowed on or after November 20 will be due January 14, 2009.
If you take out an overnight DVD on November 25 or 26, the due date is also January 14, 2009.
What if I have an item on hold? Will I be able to pick it up while you are closed?
Anything that remains on our hold shelf when we close will be waiting for you when we open in the New Building.
Can I submit an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request while you are closed?
New Canaan Library has agreed to do Interlibrary Loans for Darien residents while we are closed.
What about fines?
With the extended loan period in effect, no overdue fines will be assessed until after January 14, 2009. You will not be fined for failing to return materials during the time we’re closed.
Will the book drop be available?
The book drop will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Can I place reserves during the time that the Library is closed?
Yes, we will accept reserves online for items that already have a waiting list, although materials will not be available for you to pick up until we’ve opened the New Library. We will record online reserves and honor them in the order received. Items with an "On Shelf" status will not be holdable until a few days before we reopen. We will not be able to accept telephone reserves during the time we’re closed.
Do you need volunteer help during the move?
Our staff will be here every day, re-organizing the collection, labeling, boxing, and cleaning out over 50 years of memories from this building. However, as we approach the Grand Opening date, we will be asking volunteers in to "test drive" the New Library. If you are interested in helping us during this trial period, please contact Kate Sheehan at ksheehan@darienlibrary.org or at 655-1234 x158.
While you’re closed, where else can I borrow books, music, and movies/use a computer/read a newspaper or magazine/find children’s programs, and more?
We’ve compiled a list of nearby libraries who will welcome you during the weeks we’re closed. You can bring your Darien Library card* to any public library in Connecticut, register for free, and enjoy the books, computers, and resources there until we’re ready to open our doors again.
*You will need ID and your Darien Library card to register at neighboring libraries.
While you're closed, will I be able to access the Library website?
When we close our doors on November 26th, our website will continue to remain open. There will, however, be an interruption of service as the system is physically moved to the new building.
If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
Thursday, October 30, 2008 - 2:18pm — Barbara T.

We close this building in less than 4 weeks. We're looking forward. We're looking back. It's a wonder our heads aren't spinning...there is no time to wind down before we gear up for everything that's to come with our big, exciting move.
Besides, we still have lots going on here throughout the month of November!
On November 22nd, we will host A Fond Farewell, a gathering to say goodbye to our beloved building. If you are interested in attending, the ticket price is $75.00 per person. The party will include a silent auction of some well-loved, recognizable items, giving attendees the opportunity to own a piece of the Old Darien Library. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served. RSVP by November 7th. Click here for more information.

In other November-news, our final Book Sale in this building begins next Saturday, the 8th! There will be an enormous amount of really great stuff for sale and you'll have through noon on the 12th to come by and sort through. Here are all the details.

On Sunday, November 16th, our Fall Book Discussion Serie s concludes with Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri. It's the 4th and final book of our series, OF THEE I SING: NOVELS ABOUT THE CHANGING FACE OF AMERICA. We'll meet with our discussion leader Jordon Pecile (pictured at left) at 2:30 p.m. in the Program Room.
And fall is not fall in Darien without our Foreign Film Series! There are still two more films on the schedule and you won't want to miss them!
On Friday, November 14th, we'll be showing The Grocer's Son. In French with English subtitles, running time is 96 minutes.
And then on Friday November 21st (our last Friday in the building), Hula Girls will be the feature. In Japanese with English subtitles, the films runs 120 minutes.
We also have a fine art show that just went up and will be our Art On View through the rest of our time here. The exhibit is by the Art Faculty of the Darien Schools and not only is it a privilege to view, it's fabulous knowing that we are so privileged to have these talented individuals teaching in our schools!

Thursday, October 30, 2008 - 11:24am — Barbara T.
Some of us have not been trick-or-treating in years, but we never forget the glee we felt at all the goodies at the end of the night.
This Friday, the 31st, our Foreign Film Series continues with a treat of a film, The Flight of the Red Balloon, starring Juliette Binoche. Here's a brief synopsis of the film:
The details of everyday life are turned to poetry in this tribute to Lamorisse’s 1956 classic short "The Red Balloon." Juliette Binoche stars as a single Parisian mother who, overwhelmed by the complications of modern daily life, employs a Taiwanese film student as her son’s babysitter. As the babysitter and the young child explore the streets and cafes of the city, they begin to share an imaginary world where a mysterious red balloon affectionately follows them wherever they go.
In French with English subtitles, running time is 113 minutes. (This film is not rated.)
Showtime is at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 and refreshements will (of course!) be served. Because it's Halloween...we'll even have pumpkin chocolate chip cookies! What a treat!
