Event Details
Hydrangeas are beloved for their big, beautiful blooms—but behind their charm lies a world of confusion. Some bloom on old wood, some on new. Prune at the wrong time and you’ll miss a season of flowers. Plant them in the wrong place and they’ll never thrive.
Sound familiar?
Learn everything you need to know about hydrangeas at a special collaborative event with The Gardener's Center. Sean, store manager and plant guru, will break down everything you need to know about growing, maintaining, and falling in love with hydrangeas.
Whether you’re a beginner or a long-time grower, this seminar will give you real, practical knowledge you can use right away—plus a whole new appreciation for one of the most diverse plant families in the garden.
Topics covered include:
- The truth about pruning — Which hydrangeas should be cut back, when, and how hard.
- Color control — Learn how to turn your blooms blue, pink, or purple with the right soil amendments.
- Hydrangeas by type — From mopheads to paniculatas, macrophylla to climbing varieties, Sean will explain the differences and help you choose the right one for your space.
- Sunlight and spacing tips — Put the right hydrangea in the right place and it’ll thrive with very little maintenance.
- New varieties, new excitement — Be among the first to see exclusive new cultivars. Sean will explain what makes them so special.
- Common issues and real fixes — Including how to manage pests, spring frost damage, and bloom delays.
Plus, learn about climbing hydrangeas, fertilizing schedules, and why this stunning shrub has gone from a handful of varieties 30 years ago to hundreds today.
Please note that his program will be held at The Gardener's Center, located at 1396 Post Road.
About Sean
Sean is The Garden Center's Garden Guru & General Manager who has been working in the retail garden center industry for 27 years and has been with The Gardener’s Center since 2006. He developed a love for horticulture at an early age helping his great grandmother with her extensive perennial gardens. The best part of his job is getting to talk to people about plants every day, whether it be a novice gardener or plant geek like him. He loves hearing people’s success stories and is always able to help when things don’t go exactly as planned. In his free time he enjoys gardening (obviously!), cooking, reading and keeping up with his 1898 Queen Anne Victorian house!
