Program Description

Event Details

Join us for a special book group to celebrate Jane Austen's 250th birthday on December 16th.

Persuasion is the final book Austen completed before her death in 1817. Austen was shown as the author of Persuasion's publication thanks to her brother; while she was not publicly named for the previous works. Austen did not see critical acclaim and renown in her lifetime as she does today.

Persuasion offers a number of themes that are applicable to modern audiences including love, regret, mental health, morality, women's position in society, and developing your own found family.

About the Book

Persuasion follows Anne Elliot, whose relationship with Frederick Wentworth, a suitor, ended years prior after she was persuaded by her family to break it off. Her family is now in debt and rent out their estate to a different family. Anne and Frederick are both single and meet again under these new circumstances. Anne has to navigate her own feelings, societal pressures, and family obligations.

How to Access the Book

The chapters of the book will be delivered by email but may also be read by borrowing a copy from Darien Library or reading it in a preferred format from Project Gutenberg
