Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See tells the extraordinary story of a young Chinese woman who contrary to tradition is trained in female medicine by her grandmother. Born into an elite family, Tan is brought up by her grandparents after the death of her mother. Tan's grandmother, one of only a handful of female physicians, teaches Tan about women's illnesses, many of which are related to childbearing. The novel is inspired by true event.
